AthenaHealth | 2013 — 2014

Senior Manager, UX

AthenaHealth creates cloud-based solutions for healthcare professionals and their patients, including products like an EHR, Revenue Cycle Services, and more. AthenaHealth acquired Epocrates in 2013 and when we joined, one of their many business directives was expanding their brand awareness amongst healthcare professionals.

Epocrates could provide access to a significant portion of all doctors, nurses, PAs and more in the USA.

After acquisition, working at AthenaHealth brought with it a much larger design team, additional products, and a number of interesting opportunities to merge some of the work from Epocrates with some of the products on AthenaHealth’s roadmap.

My Core Responsibilities

  • I was given the opportunity to expand my UX team that was tasked with the conceptualization, design, and delivery of fully functioning features and products to the wider engineering teams to expand and release.

  • Lead a team consisting of designers, engineers (front-end prototyping, UI refinement), and researchers. I reported to the VP of Design.

  • Create artifacts throughout the design and development process including, interaction documentation, animation concepts, and app visuals.

  • Ensure regular communication with senior product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand changing business needs, define product goals, and create the development plan.

  • Work closely with the VP of Design to make significant changes to team culture and process—with a distinct focus on HCD methodologies.

  • Participate in user research and synthesize results with other researchers.

  • Evaluate the team’s design concepts, storyboards, wireframes, prototypes, UI designs, etc.
